A fast-moving wildfire swept through an outdoor military exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, killing four Canadian service members and injuring 39 others, officials confirmed.
Driven by gale-force wind shifts reaching up to 96 km/h, the blaze rapidly crossed firebreaks and engulfed an administrative area during tactical drills, trapping troops on the range. At least 19 soldiers remain in critical condition with severe burns across regional hospitals.
Calling the tragedy one of the worst peacetime domestic disasters for Canada's military, Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered flags lowered to half-staff as federal and military authorities launch an investigation into the cause.
