The twin-masted brigantine Tres Hombres arrived in Amsterdam this week carrying 40 tonnes of ethically sourced Caribbean rum, coffee, and cocoa, showcasing a cleaner future for international maritime trade. The 32-metre vessel completed its transatlantic journey relying entirely on wind power to bypass conventional fossil fuels.
By operating completely without an engine, the ship provides a zero-emissions alternative to standard commercial transport. "We have almost no emissions because we sail without an engine," said Sabine Fox, head of the firm operating the Tres Hombres.
As global supply chains search for ways to cut heavy carbon footprints, the vessel proves that traditional sail power can be successfully revived to meet modern sustainability goals. The successful voyage highlights growing commercial interest in eco-friendly ocean freight options.
