In the immediate aftermath of a violent magnitude 7.4 earthquake that tore through western Colombia, the city of Pereira was plunged into chaos.
Emergency search-and-rescue teams, flanked by desperate local residents, worked tirelessly through mounting piles of shattered concrete, twisted rebar, and pulverized brick.
Using heavy machinery, sniffer dogs, and often their bare hands, crews picked through the wreckage of collapsed homes and commercial high-rises, straining to detect any signs of life trapped beneath the rubble as aftershocks continued to rattle the region.
