U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that a stable yen is critical not only for domestic interests but for broader economic stability across the region.

Addressing concerns over Japan’s currency weakness, Bessent praised Tokyo’s commitment to implementing structural policy reforms alongside market actions to restore the yen toward a normal equilibrium.

He noted that regional stability requires preventing a cascade of currency depreciations across Asian markets, referencing lessons from the 1997–1998 Asian financial crisis.

While market interventions signal firm resolve to currency speculators, Bessent stressed that long-term stabilization relies on policy fundamentals. He expressed high confidence in Japanese leadership and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda as Japan moves toward primary budget surpluses and continued fiscal discipline.
