Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly told Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov that Moscow cannot expect sanctions relief or new economic agreements while the war in Ukraine continues, according to Reuters.
The two officials met Monday on the sidelines of the G20 finance ministers’ gathering in Asheville, North Carolina. Bessent reportedly delivered the message after Siluanov raised areas of potential cooperation between the two countries.
Siluanov’s appearance at the gathering marked his first in-person participation since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. European officials objected to his presence and opposed including him in the traditional G20 group photograph.
The talks highlighted a difference between Washington and European governments. While the Trump administration appears willing to maintain diplomatic channels with Moscow, European nations are preparing additional sanctions designed to increase economic pressure on Russia as the conflict continues.
