The report said weekly jobless claims continue to suggest a stable labor market. However, June hiring slowed sharply, with employers adding just 57,000 jobs. The unemployment rate declined to 4.2%, largely because fewer unemployed people were actively seeking work.

Hiring has eased over the past two years amid President Donald Trump's tariffs, reductions in the federal workforce and the lingering impact of high interest rates. Several major companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, UPS, Walmart, Disney and Starbucks, have announced job cuts in recent months.

Continuing unemployment claims rose to 1.81 million, remaining within historically healthy levels.
