New applications for U.S. unemployment benefits fell modestly last week, indicating that layoffs remain at historically low levels despite signs of slower hiring.
According to the U.S. Labor Department, 215,000 Americans filed initial jobless claims in the week ending July 4, down 2,000 from the previous week and below analysts' expectation of 220,000, reported by FactSet.
Hiring has eased over the past two years amid President Donald Trump's tariffs, reductions in the federal workforce and the lingering impact of high interest rates. Several major companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, UPS, Walmart, Disney and Starbucks, have announced job cuts in recent months.
Continuing unemployment claims rose to 1.81 million, remaining within historically healthy levels.
