Which Way Will Pelosi Go? Democrats Await Retirement Decision

Democrats are preparing for Nancy Pelosi’s possible retirement, as the 85-year-old former House Speaker is expected to announce her political future after Tuesday’s California elections.

The decision comes as voters consider Proposition 50, a redistricting measure Pelosi strongly supports to help Democrats win back the House.

Party insiders believe Pelosi will not seek reelection in 2026, ending nearly 40 years in Congress. Her exit would mark the close of a defining era in Democratic leadership and trigger a fierce race for her San Francisco seat.

Pelosi’s allies praise her as the most effective Speaker in U.S. history, while critics note recent tensions within the party, including her pressure on President Joe Biden to step aside and clashes with progressives.

Pelosi has neither confirmed nor denied retirement rumors, saying she’s focused solely on passing Prop 50 to “stop the poison” of Trump-era policies.
