The White House has asked US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign following media reports alleging misconduct before and during her diplomatic appointment, according to Axios.

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the request on Tuesday, saying Guilfoyle had been an asset to the administration. President Donald Trump had previously indicated he was considering dismissing her.

Other reports alleged she promoted a Greek company's business interests and accepted luxury hospitality from wealthy businessmen.

Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing. Her lawyer challenged the authenticity of messages cited in the reporting, while the US Embassy said she followed State Department ethics requirements.

The State Department's inspector general is reviewing the allegations, the Associated Press reported. Congressional Democrats have also called for further scrutiny.
