Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner has suspended his campaign following a sexual assault allegation, leaving the party searching for a replacement ahead of a key filing deadline.
According to the report, Platner announced his decision Wednesday, just days after allegations from a former girlfriend were made public.
The report said Platner had previously withstood controversy over allegations of toxic behavior and still secured strong support in the Democratic primary.
According to the report, Maine Democrats must choose a new Senate nominee at a convention within two weeks to meet the state's July 27 deadline.
The party now faces the challenge of organizing a new campaign against Republican Sen. Susan Collins while attempting to retain support from voters who backed Platner in the primary.
