With roughly 64% of the estimated vote counted, Lewis George held nearly 53% support, while former DC Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie trailed with about 36%. Additional mail ballots and drop-box votes remain outstanding.

The report said ranked-choice voting could come into play if Lewis George’s share falls below 50%, though her current margin gives her a strong advantage.

Lewis George campaigned on affordability, improving city services and pushing back against policies of President Donald Trump.

In a separate race, Washington DC At-Large Councilmember Robert White secured the Democratic nomination for the city’s nonvoting delegate seat in Congress, according to CNN’s Decision Desk. White will succeed longtime delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who ended her reelection campaign earlier this year after serving 18 terms.

Election officials are expected to release additional results and possible ranked-choice tabulations later this week.
