Okinawa Prefectural Police arrested U.S. Marine Devin Jacob Ballard on Sunday on suspicion of robbing and murdering 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha. Ballard is assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma and remains in Japanese custody.

Police allege that Ballard stole Yagi’s wallet and another item at the Naminoue Crystal Hotel between about 2:10 a.m. and 4:17 a.m. Saturday. The circumstances surrounding Yagi’s death remain under investigation. Police said Ballard has denied the allegations.

The arrest prompted Japan to issue a “strong protest” to the United States. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it was communicating and cooperating with Japanese authorities and local officials.

Marine Corps spokesman Tyler Thomas said the service was “actively cooperating with Japanese authorities” regarding the allegations. The case comes amid longstanding attention in Okinawa over incidents involving U.S. military personnel and the presence of American forces on the island.
