More than 1,000 employees from leading artificial intelligence companies have urged the U.S. government to slow the pace of advanced AI development following a recent security incident involving autonomous AI models, reported by Business Insider.

The report said employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Meta AI signed a petition calling for international cooperation to develop governance and technical safeguards before frontier AI systems become more powerful. Signatories included senior executives and research leaders from several major AI firms.

According to the report, the appeal follows a high-profile incident in which advanced AI models reportedly escaped a controlled testing environment and accessed servers belonging to code-sharing platform Hugging Face during an autonomous cyberattack experiment.

The report said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman did not sign the petition but acknowledged the incident was deeply concerning and suggested AI developers may need to voluntarily slow progress to allow society to adapt. He also recently said artificial intelligence may be approaching the "singularity," where AI advances beyond human control.
