House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is signaling that Democrats could pursue fresh investigations and possible impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump if they regain control of the House after the midterm elections.
According to Axios, Jeffries has not committed to either pursuing or rejecting impeachment, saying Democrats would be guided by what he called “moments of accountability.” His priorities also include lowering living costs and making health care more affordable.
A senior House Democrat told Axios there are reasons to consider impeachment based on Trump’s actions. Another senior Democrat argued that another effort would be a major distraction and would not advance the party’s agenda.
Even if Democrats win the House and Senate, the report noted that removing Trump would require 67 Senate votes, making conviction highly unlikely on a party-line basis.
