President Donald Trump has escalated his dispute with Canada by floating a proposal to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” as trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa intensify.
According to CNN, Trump made the suggestion in a Truth Social post, linking the idea to his claim that the United States may no longer conduct significant business with Ontario. The remarks followed the breakdown of recent U.S.-Canada trade negotiations.
Canada has threatened to retaliate with matching, dollar-for-dollar tariffs starting September 8.
The dispute adds another flashpoint to already strained relations between the two longtime trading partners. Trump has repeatedly accused Canada of taking advantage of the United States, while Canadian officials have pledged to defend their economic interests against additional U.S. tariffs.
