Former New York City Council candidate Jonathan Rinaldi has been arrested and charged with forgery after prosecutors alleged he used artificial intelligence to create and distribute fabricated political endorsements and fake news content during his election campaigns.

According to prosecutors, Rinaldi generated an image resembling a New York Post article falsely suggesting that Council Member Robert Holden had endorsed his candidacy.

He is also accused of sharing manipulated images portraying political opponent Lynn Schulman wearing a shirt with a fabricated slogan. Authorities say the content violated New York laws prohibiting the falsification of written instruments intended to mislead the public.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said the case highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for using deceptive materials in political campaigns.

💡
Rinaldi, who was unsuccessful in both last year's City Council race and this year's Democratic Assembly primary, denied wrongdoing, arguing that his social media posts are protected under the First Amendment.

The case adds to growing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in U.S. elections, as lawmakers and regulators continue debating how existing laws should apply to AI-generated political content and misinformation.
