Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Friday after a court found him guilty of charges linked to a military drone operation over Pyongyang in 2024, according to Reuters and Yonhap News Agency.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Yoon had conspired in the drone incursion from the beginning and convicted him of abuse of power and aiding the enemy. Prosecutors argued that the operation was intended to help create a justification for his failed martial law declaration in December 2024.
Yoon denied any wrongdoing. His legal team said he neither ordered nor approved the drone mission and argued it was a response to repeated North Korean balloon launches across the border.
The report said prosecutors had sought a 30-year sentence in April. The ruling adds to Yoon’s growing legal troubles after he was previously sentenced to life imprisonment in February for his role in the martial law attempt.
Yoon, who was removed from office following impeachment, remains in custody and is expected to appeal the latest verdict.
