Trump will travel to Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea this week — his first regional visit since taking office in January.
Officials in Seoul, including President Lee Jae Myung, remain cautious but said a potential Trump–Kim meeting could help stabilize the Korean Peninsula and boost North Korea’s global standing.
Trump and Kim met three times during his previous term, including a 2019 encounter at Panmunjom, but talks collapsed over disagreements on sanctions relief and nuclear disarmament steps.
Chung said that bypassing formal diplomatic hurdles this time could allow both sides to “make a bold decision” toward peace and stability — a goal long sought but rarely achieved.
