The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will deliver its judgment on November 19 in a landmark case examining whether Myanmar's 2017 military crackdown against the Rohingya Muslim minority constituted genocide.

The Gambia brought the case, alleging that Myanmar's offensive forced at least 730,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. More than one million Rohingya remain in the country.

Myanmar has rejected the genocide allegations, maintaining that its military operations were legitimate counter-terrorism measures launched after insurgent attacks killed security personnel.

The ruling will mark only the third time the ICJ has delivered a judgment in a genocide case. Its findings could also influence proceedings in South Africa's separate genocide case against Israel.

Although the World Court cannot directly enforce its decisions, a ruling against Myanmar could intensify international pressure on the country's military leadership after years of scrutiny over the treatment of the Rohingya population.
