Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that Beijing will send two pandas to Atlanta’s zoo during his state visit with President Donald Trump, calling the animals “envoys of friendship.”
Trump praised what he described as a strong personal relationship with Xi as the two leaders began their closely watched meeting. Xi also said China would invite 100,000 American young people to China over the next five years for education and cultural exchanges.
Xi wants Washington to stop arms sales to Taiwan and ease restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports. Meanwhile, the U.S. and China agreed to extend their existing trade truce by two months beyond its scheduled November 10 expiration.
Xi said competition between the countries should remain constructive and avoid a winner-takes-all approach. The leaders were expected to address the outstanding disputes during private discussions.
