An Amazon Prime Air drone accidentally dropped a customer’s package into her backyard swimming pool in Richmond, Texas, highlighting some of the challenges facing the company’s expanding drone delivery service.

Lindsey Austen said she was shocked when the drone released the package directly into the water.

Amazon uses drones to deliver lightweight packages, with each aircraft capable of carrying up to five pounds. Prime members receive the service free, while non-members pay $4.99 per delivery.

The incident comes as Amazon prepares to expand Prime Air to nearly 500 U.S. cities, primarily in suburban areas away from airports and dense urban districts. The service continues to face regulatory requirements and local restrictions, including noise concerns.

Austen told Storyful that the experience made her reluctant to use drone deliveries again. The mishap illustrates the operational difficulties Amazon must overcome as it seeks to make drone delivery a larger part of its logistics network.
