Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from Argentina’s national soccer team, bringing an end to nearly two decades of international competition, according to CBS News.

The 39-year-old star represented Argentina at six World Cups and captained the team to its 2022 championship in Qatar. Argentina reached the final again this summer but lost to Spain.

In an Instagram statement, Messi said the decision was painful but acknowledged that the time had come to step away. He said he had consistently given his best for the national team and wanted to make Argentines proud.

The announcement comes weeks after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, at 68.

Messi will continue his club career with Inter Miami. His departure closes one of the most decorated chapters in Argentine soccer history, highlighted by a World Cup triumph after years of international disappointment.
