At least 11 members of Niger’s security forces were killed after a coordinated attack targeted the area surrounding Diori Hamani International Airport and an adjacent military installation in the capital, Niamey, highlighting the persistent security challenges facing the West African nation.
The assault began early Thursday with explosions followed by sustained gunfire, according to security officials.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Niger has been battling a prolonged insurgency involving extremist organizations linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
These groups have carried out numerous attacks across the Sahel region, contributing to widespread instability, displacement, and loss of life in Niger and neighboring countries.
The recurrence of such attacks raises concerns about the ability of security forces to protect critical infrastructure amid a worsening regional security environment.
Niger has undergone significant political and military upheaval in recent years, with the country's leadership emphasizing counterterrorism efforts as a national priority.
Military ruler Abdourahamane Tiani has frequently accused foreign actors of contributing to instability, though such claims have often been disputed or unsupported by publicly available evidence.
