A 300-pound black bear died after becoming trapped inside an unlocked vehicle in Colorado Springs, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials.

The bear apparently entered the car while searching for food and was unable to escape before succumbing to extreme summer heat.

Colorado is experiencing a severe drought and what wildlife officials describe as a “food failure” year, pushing more bears out of mountainous areas in search of food. The state recorded 6,129 bear sightings and conflicts through August 13, nearly twice last year's total.

Officials warn that bears have an exceptionally strong sense of smell and can be attracted to food, rubbish and other scented items left inside vehicles. Residents are urged to lock vehicles, close windows and remove anything that could attract wildlife.

The incident follows a similar case in nearby Manitou Springs, where a bear was safely rescued after becoming trapped inside a vehicle. Colorado has also strengthened penalties for knowingly feeding bears, with repeat violations carrying fines of up to $5,000.
