Thousands of dogs and cats in Texas are unable to leave shelters for adoption as authorities and other states impose restrictions to prevent the spread of New World screwworm.

According to the report, 44 states have introduced restrictions on moving pets from Texas, preventing shelters and rescue groups from transporting animals to other parts of the country. The measures have contributed to overcrowding and increased concerns about euthanasia.

The Gulf Coast Humane Society in Corpus Christi saw its animal population increase from about 325 to nearly 450 after transport programs were disrupted.

Animal welfare officials said both small rescue organisations and larger shelters are struggling with the growing numbers.

The restrictions are intended to limit the spread of the screwworm, but they are creating significant challenges for Texas shelters that depend on interstate adoptions and transfers to manage their populations.
