Twin explosions struck central Damascus on Tuesday near the Four Seasons Hotel, where French President Emmanuel Macron had stayed before meeting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, reported by CNN.

According to the Élysée Palace, Macron was unharmed because he had already arrived at the Presidential Palace when the blasts occurred. Syria's state-run news agency SANA said at least 18 people, including four police officers, were injured.

The report said one explosive device detonated inside a parked vehicle near the Four Seasons Hotel, while a second exploded from a garbage container near the Ministry of Tourism. Syrian authorities described both as crude explosive devices and launched an investigation to identify those responsible.

Macron's visit marks the first official trip by a Western leader to Syria since the fall of the Assad government in December 2024. The explosions came less than a week after another deadly attack in Damascus that killed nine people and injured 22 others, according to Syrian officials.
