Capital Murder Suspect Hospitalized After Refusing Food In Jail

The man accused of fatally shooting one National Guard member and wounding another in Washington, D.C., in 2025 has been hospitalized after refusing to eat and, at times, drink while in custody.

According to the report, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said during an emergency hearing that Rahmanullah Lakanwal's health had deteriorated significantly, describing the situation as largely self-inflicted.

The report said Lakanwal was admitted to George Washington University Hospital after the U.S. Marshals Service alerted prosecutors to concerns about his health.

Judge Mehta authorized prosecutors to review his recent medical records to help determine the appropriate next steps in the case.

According to the report, Lakanwal traveled from Washington state to the nation's capital before allegedly ambushing two National Guard members in late November 2025.

He has pleaded not guilty to nine charges, including first-degree murder, and remains awaiting trial.

According to the report, the trial is expected to last about two weeks, and attorneys for both sides have not discussed a plea agreement.
