Dangerous Heat Wave Expands Across Much Of The United States

A prolonged heat wave is bringing record-breaking temperatures to large parts of the United States, with little overnight relief expected for millions of residents.

According to the report, Billings, Montana, reached 111°F and Salt Lake City, Utah, recorded 109°F on Sunday, setting all-time temperature records as Extreme Heat Warnings remain in effect across much of the West and northern Plains.

The report said a persistent heat dome is trapping hot air over the region and is expected to spread toward the Northeast, affecting nearly 100 million people.

Forecasters warned that temperatures could remain 15 to 25 degrees above seasonal averages through next weekend.

According to the report, health officials are urging people to take precautions as limited nighttime cooling increases the risk of heat-related illness.

The report also noted that wildfire conditions remain hazardous in parts of Colorado, where the Aspen Acres Fire is 35 percent contained amid the ongoing extreme heat.
