Republicans are warning major artificial intelligence companies that growing opposition to data centers could threaten their chances of retaining a key Ohio Senate seat, according to Axios.

In a private memo obtained by Axios, the National Republican Senatorial Committee said Democratic former Sen. Sherrod Brown has made data centers a central issue in his campaign against Republican Sen. Jon Husted.

The memo urged AI companies to explain the economic benefits of data centers and address concerns over costs and community impacts.

Data centers have faced increasing criticism over their heavy electricity and water use, potential effects on utility bills and large physical footprint. Critics have also linked them to broader concerns about AI-driven job losses.

The political stakes are rising as thousands of data centers operate or are planned across the country. Ohio has attracted projects involving major technology companies, including Nvidia, OpenAI, Meta, Vantage and QTS.

Axios reported that a recent Fox News poll showed Brown leading Husted by eight points. Republicans fear a loss could encourage similar political campaigns against data center projects nationwide.
