Ferrari’s first fully electric car has set a new auction record after a bespoke version sold for $40 million during Monterey Car Week in California.

According to RM Sotheby’s, the Ferrari Luce “Chassis 0” fetched 36 times its original $1.1 million estimate, making it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

The sale comes months after the Luce received mixed reactions from Ferrari enthusiasts and the company’s shares fell more than 8% following its May unveiling. The EV features four electric motors and a design that departs sharply from Ferrari’s traditional styling.

The one-off model has a custom pearl-like finish, specialized leather interior and color-shifting exterior details. Ferrari said all auction proceeds will support educational programs through The Ferrari Foundation.

The car will return to Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello before being delivered to its anonymous buyer in early 2027. The standard Luce is priced at about $640,000.
