Russia had announced a temporary ceasefire for May 8 and 9 ahead of its Victory Day celebrations in Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded by proposing an open-ended ceasefire beginning Tuesday midnight.

Meanwhile, Ukraine launched long-range drone and missile strikes deep inside Russia, including in the Chuvashia region, where officials reported deaths and injuries.
