Progressive candidate Melat Kiros has defeated 15-term Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado's 1st Congressional District primary, according to projections by The Associated Press and other media outlets.

With more than 90% of votes counted, Kiros led DeGette 51% to 42%, ending the longtime congresswoman's nearly three-decade tenure.

Kiros, 29, campaigned as a democratic socialist on issues including Medicare for All, universal childcare, artificial intelligence regulation, abolishing ICE and an arms embargo on Israel. Report by MotherJones said she gained national attention after losing her legal job following public support for pro-Palestinian law students.

According to the report, DeGette received millions of dollars in outside support during the closing weeks of the campaign, while Kiros was backed by progressive groups including Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Republicans quickly criticized the result, while Kiros said she intends to work with other progressive lawmakers to push the Democratic Party further left.
