The U.S. Coast Guard is facing a deepening operational and financial crisis as the Department of Homeland Security shutdown stretches into its 75th day, reported by CBS News.

The service owes over $300 million and has more than 6,000 unpaid utility bills, triggering power, water, and gas disruptions at bases and housing units. Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday warned that outages are already affecting missions and personnel welfare.

According to CBS News, funding to pay Coast Guard personnel will run out by May 1, with missed paychecks expected mid-May. Families are increasingly strained, with some relying on food pantries or taking on debt to manage relocation and living costs.

Despite this, about 300 personnel remain deployed in the Middle East, while others conduct high-risk maritime operations.

The report said training exercises have been canceled and maintenance delayed, weakening readiness. Lunday called the situation a “crisis,” warning of long-term damage to morale, recruitment, and national security operations.
