Himalayas At Tipping Point In Wake Of Nepal Disaster

The authors of a new study believe the Himalayas are at a crisis point –with millions of lives and livelihoods threatened – and have proposed a path to resilience based on sustainable development.

Glaciers are melting faster than they did a decade ago, with exposed dark rock lowering the albedo – the ability to reflect sunlight – thereby absorbing more heat and accelerating further melting. With increased glacial melting comes a greater threat to water security as the region approaches "peak water" by mid-century – the maximum glacial runoff after which the receding glaciers provide less freshwater downstream.

Natural hazards trigger further hazards, such as the glacier collapse in Nepal, which turned from a landslide to a dam to a flood in less than two hours. The cost of reconstruction in Nepal could be 10% of the country’s entire GDP, highlighting the potential strain of sovereign debt and the lack of resources available to invest in resilience.

Ukraine Strikes Gas Complex In Siberia

Long-range Ukrainian drones struck Russian gas plants in northern Siberia almost 3,000km away, bringing Russian energy infrastructure in the Arctic within range and further threatening the struggling economy.

Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant, approximately 2,840km from Ukraine, and Purovsky Gas Condensate Treatment Plant, at around 2,780km, were the longest-distance strikes by Ukraine since the start of the war. It is believed that Fire Point FP-1 long-range strike drones were used to target the facilities. The previous furthest was in July 2026, when an FP-1 struck the Omsk Oil Refinery at around 2,500 km. The FP-1 can be launched from a truck and can be deployed within 18 minutes. A modernized version is thought to have a range of over 2,800km.

Ukraine has continually increased the range of its UAVs and its capacity to mass-produce low-cost drones. Most recently, it has targeted Russian energy infrastructure and logistical hubs to damage the economy.
