The U.S. Justice Department has removed a senior federal prosecutor overseeing the investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan after she resisted pressure to accelerate potential charges, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Maria Medetis Long, a career prosecutor based in Miami, informed legal teams she was no longer leading the probe. The report said the investigation centers on whether Brennan misled Congress about the 2017 intelligence assessment on Russian election interference.

According to CNN, prosecutors and investigators have expressed doubts about the strength of the case and pushed back against demands to fast-track charges. However, the probe remains active, with subpoenas issued and witness interviews ongoing.
The move comes amid heightened pressure from President Donald Trump, who has long criticized Brennan. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has reportedly sought quicker progress.
Officials indicated that any charges could still take months, despite expectations from senior Justice Department leadership.
