The Alaska Supreme Court has ruled that Daniel J. Sullivan, a Republican candidate with the same name as incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, can appear on the state's August Senate primary ballot, reported by CBS News.
The justices directed the Alaska Division of Elections to determine how his name should appear on the ballot under existing ballot design rules.
State election officials had argued the candidate's filing, campaign branding and Republican identification suggested an effort to mislead voters. However, Daniel J. Sullivan denied those allegations and maintained he is a legitimate candidate.
According to CBS News, Sen. Sullivan's campaign called his challenger a "sham candidate" but welcomed the court's decision allowing election officials to clearly distinguish between the two candidates on the ballot before voting begins.
