A record-breaking heat wave sweeping across Europe has triggered major disruptions, including a large power outage in western France, according to officials. The outage left around 68,000 homes without electricity after a heat-related incident affected a transformer in Finistere, the report said.
According to Meteo France, the country recorded its hottest day ever on a national scale, with temperatures reaching 44.3 degrees Celsius in southwestern France. Several cities also registered unprecedented readings.
The heat wave has disrupted schools and transportation networks across Europe. Red weather alerts have been issued in countries including the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and intense. The report noted that Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average rate.
