Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro reportedly left for the United States following his runoff election defeat, according to an ally who spoke to Reuters on Tuesday.

A judge had prohibited Bolsonaro from leaving Brazil and ordered him to surrender his passports within 24 hours amid investigations into alleged money laundering. After he reportedly failed to comply, police canceled all his passports, and authorities began monitoring border crossings.

Officials in a neighboring country denied reports that Bolsonaro had entered their territory, saying there was no record of him crossing the border.

Bolsonaro has claimed the travel restrictions were imposed because of comments made by his brother in the United States.

However, investigations into alleged money laundering remain ongoing, while questions surrounding the senator’s reported departure continue.
