Senate Republicans are moving ahead with a major immigration funding package tied to the Department of Homeland Security, but proposed security funding connected to President Donald Trump’s White House East Wing overhaul is drawing criticism from Democrats.
According to the report, the $72 billion proposal includes more than $38 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and $26 billion for Customs and Border Protection through fiscal year 2029.

The bill also allocates $1 billion to the Secret Service for security upgrades linked to the White House modernization project, including Trump’s planned ballroom and underground security facilities.
The White House defended the funding, saying the upgrades are necessary to improve security at the presidential complex. Officials also stressed that taxpayer money would not fund non-security elements of the ballroom project.
Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, attacked the proposal as politically tone-deaf amid economic concerns. Republicans, however, may still pass the measure through budget reconciliation without Democratic support.
