Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has sharply criticized former President Joe Biden for seeking reelection in 2024, describing the decision as a “terrible mistake” and arguing that he should have stepped aside earlier to allow a new generation of Democratic leaders to compete for the nomination.
Speaking during an interview with journalist David Remnick, Clinton said Biden missed an opportunity to follow through on earlier suggestions that he would serve as a bridge to younger leadership within the Democratic Party.
Clinton further contended that an open nomination contest would likely have produced a Democratic candidate capable of defeating Donald Trump.
In her view, a competitive primary would have strengthened the eventual nominee and energized the party ahead of the general election.
However, the transition occurred without a full primary contest, a decision that continues to generate debate among party leaders and strategists.
Clinton's remarks add to a broader post-election discussion within Democratic circles about campaign strategy, succession planning, and party leadership.
As Democrats assess the lessons of the 2024 election cycle, questions about how and when political parties should manage leadership transitions remain a central topic of debate.
