House Republicans narrowly passed President Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill Thursday in a 218–214 vote, just ahead of his July 4 deadline.
The vote followed a marathon floor speech by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who spoke for over eight hours in protest. Jeffries denounced the bill’s deep cuts to social programs, calling it Trump’s “big ugly bill,” and read letters from Americans who rely on the safety net.

Republicans erupted in chants of “U-S-A!” as the final vote was tallied. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., hailed the bill as a historic win, promising it would make the country “stronger, safer, and more prosperous.”
The bill now heads to Trump’s desk for signing, marking a major milestone for his second-term agenda.
