President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel the signing of a bipartisan housing affordability bill has created fresh tensions ahead of a scheduled meeting with Senate Republicans, according to CBS News.
The housing bill had been widely viewed as a rare bipartisan achievement and was designed to address rising housing costs through measures aimed at boosting supply and easing affordability pressures. However, Trump said the legislation was less important than election reform.
According to CBS News, several Republican senators have acknowledged that the SAVE America Act currently lacks sufficient support in the Senate, where it would face Democratic opposition and procedural hurdles.
The dispute is expected to dominate Trump’s discussions with GOP lawmakers, many of whom have expressed frustration over recent White House actions that have complicated the party’s legislative agenda ahead of the midterm elections.
