President Donald Trump abruptly canceled plans to sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill on Wednesday, despite Congress recently approving what supporters describe as the most significant housing reform package in decades, CNN reported.
According to CNN, the proposed housing bill seeks to increase housing supply, encourage zoning and permitting reforms, expand manufactured housing, and restrict large institutional investors from purchasing additional single-family homes. Lawmakers from both parties backed the legislation as a response to rising housing costs and declining affordability.
The report said the bill would also provide incentives for local governments to support new housing construction, assist with home repairs, and encourage the conversion of vacant office buildings into apartments.
Supporters argued the legislation is a major step toward addressing America's housing shortage, though analysts noted additional reforms may still be needed to improve affordability over the long term.
