Japan Snubs American Rice Amid Crisis, Trump Calls Out Trade Hypocrisy

US President Donald Trump (R) and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba hold a joint press conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC, on February 7, 2025.

President Donald Trump on Monday took aim at Japan over its refusal to import American rice, calling it an example of how U.S. trading partners have grown “spoiled.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “To show people how spoiled countries have become with respect to the United States of America, and I have great respect for Japan, they won’t take our rice, and yet they have a massive rice shortage.”

Despite the criticism, Trump emphasized the long-standing economic ties between the two nations. “We’ll just be sending them a letter, and we love having them as a trading partner for many years to come,” he added.

Trump’s remarks come amid renewed White House efforts to renegotiate trade terms with key U.S. allies.
