Two U.S. Embassy officials killed in a car crash in Mexico were working for the Central Intelligence Agency and had been involved in joint counternarcotics operations, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The officials died alongside two Mexican agents after returning from a drug raid in Chihuahua state. According to initial reports, the crash occurred on a highway between Chihuahua and Ciudad Juárez. Authorities said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government was not aware of direct coordination between local authorities and U.S. personnel, emphasizing that such cooperation typically requires federal approval.

The report said the CIA has expanded its anti-cartel efforts in Mexico under the Trump administration, including surveillance operations and broader intelligence involvement.

U.S. officials described the incident as a reminder of the risks faced by personnel working to combat drug trafficking across the region.
