Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s Democratic primary for governor, according to CNN, positioning her for a potentially historic general election campaign later this year.
If elected in November, Lance Bottoms would become the first Black woman governor in U.S. history, as well as Georgia’s first female and first Black governor. She defeated several Democratic challengers to secure the nomination.

On the Republican side, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and healthcare executive Rick Jackson advanced to a June runoff election to determine the GOP nominee.
The race to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Brian Kemp is expected to become one of the country’s most closely watched contests. The report said the election will test whether Georgia remains a competitive swing state after supporting President Donald Trump in the last presidential election.
Lance Bottoms served as Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022 and later joined former President Joe Biden’s administration. Her campaign has focused heavily on expanding Medicaid access and increasing education funding across Georgia.
