Kim Yo-jong Warns Of Stronger Response To U.S.-Led Military Drills

Her comments came a day after she rejected renewed international calls for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, reiterating Pyongyang’s position that its nuclear status is irreversible.

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has warned that Pyongyang could take a stronger response to U.S.-led military exercises in the Asia-Pacific region.

In a statement carried by North Korean state media, she criticized the Pacific Vanguard 2026 naval exercise near Guam, which involved the United States and forces from South Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Kim described the exercise as a threatening “war game” and said North Korea would continue strengthening its nuclear deterrence. She warned that Pyongyang’s military could mobilize available means if its sovereignty or security interests were considered seriously threatened, including actions she described as proportional or more offensive.

Her comments came a day after she rejected renewed international calls for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, reiterating Pyongyang’s position that its nuclear status is irreversible. North Korean officials have also criticized growing military cooperation between the United States, South Korea and Japan.

The latest statement was Kim Yo-jong’s second in two days and comes amid continuing efforts by regional governments to manage tensions while leaving open the possibility of renewed U.S.-North Korea dialogue.
