Lebanese President Stresses Independent Path In Israel Talks

He stressed that the Lebanese state alone is directing negotiations and making sovereign decisions.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has said that negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are independent of the recently announced U.S.-Iran agreement.

According to a statement from his office, Aoun emphasized that Lebanon remains supportive of ceasefire efforts and welcomes assistance from friendly nations, including Iran. However, he stressed that the Lebanese state alone is directing negotiations and making sovereign decisions.

The remarks come ahead of a fifth round of talks between Lebanon and Israel scheduled for next week. Aoun said no external party is negotiating on Lebanon’s behalf.

The statement follows comments from Iranian officials, who warned earlier this week that continued Israeli military operations or troop deployments in Lebanon could be viewed as a violation of the broader U.S.-Iran agreement.

According to AFP, Lebanon is seeking to maintain a separate diplomatic track while continuing discussions aimed at reducing tensions along its border with Israel.
