Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended plans for closer ties with the European Union, saying the proposed alliance is not intended to create a rival geopolitical bloc against the United States, according to CNN.
Speaking to EU lawmakers in France, Carney said Canada and Europe should cooperate to strengthen economic and political resilience. He argued that deeper ties could help protect open markets, national sovereignty, territorial integrity and democratic institutions.
Carney identified climate change, trade pressures and concerns over democratic norms as challenges requiring greater cooperation. He said Canada and Europe could become stronger by working together.
The initiative has already drawn a response from US President Donald Trump, who threatened new tariffs following the European proposal.
Carney has rejected Trump’s repeated suggestion that Canada should become the 51st US state.
