Minnesota will withdraw its National Guard contingent from Washington earlier than planned, while Michigan is reviewing its continued participation amid growing questions about the mission.
According to the report, Minnesota officials said the deployment will end this Saturday following the successful conclusion of the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations, ahead of the previously scheduled return date.
The report said the deployment expanded to roughly 5,000 troops, but critics argue some Guard members have been assigned to law enforcement activities beyond event security.
According to the report, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has warned she could end her state's deployment if evidence shows troops are being used for ongoing local policing rather than the commemorative celebrations.
Michigan's current deployment is scheduled to continue through Aug. 31.
