Washington Moves To Tariff 60 Economies Over Forced Labor

A sweeping Section 301 action would hit most US trading partners, but spare electronics and AI gear.

The US Trade Representative has proposed additional tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 economies, finding that all of them failed to effectively enforce a ban on forced-labor goods. Sixteen countries including Canada, Mexico, the EU, Taiwan and the UK would face 10% levies, while Brazil draws a separate 25% over trade practices Washington calls unreasonable.

The relief valve for tech buyers: the impact is likely to be softened by significant exemptions on electronics and AI-related products, and Washington has sought comment on a new US-China Board of Trade that could lead to mutual tariff reductions.
